The Phantom Limb: Becoming One With Devices

There is a term that surfaced during my research into digital participation, one I first encountered through academic discourse, offered by a tutor in the casual register of a seminar, though its implications were anything but casual.

The term was phantom limb.

In medical neuroscience, it describes one of the most haunting phenomena the human body can produce: the persistent sensation of a limb that is no longer physically present.

Phantom limb pain is a poorly understood phenomenon in which people who have lost a limb can experience severe pain seemingly located in the missing part of the body, a condition that can be seriously debilitating and drastically reduce a person’s quality of life.

What makes it philosophically extraordinary, however, is what it reveals about the brain’s stubbornness in the face of physical loss.

A landmark study published in Nature Neuroscience, led by researchers from the National Institutes of Health and University College London, found that the brain’s control centre for a lost limb can persist long after surgical amputation, standing in stark contrast to longstanding theories about the brain’s capacity to reorganise itself.

As the study’s lead author Hunter Schone observed, “even after limb loss, the brain holds onto the body, almost like it’s waiting to reconnect in some new way.”

The brain refuses to let go of what it considers itself.

This is precisely what my tutor was gesturing toward when applying the concept to our digital devices. And the more one sits with it, the more unsettling, and clarifying, it becomes.

The Device as Extension of Self:

We have arrived at a moment in human civilisation where the mobile phone, the tablet, and increasingly the laptop, are not tools we use, they are appendages we inhabit.

The philosopher Andy Clark and cognitive scientist David Chalmers anticipated this. In their landmark 1998 paper The Extended Mind, Clark and Chalmers argued that technology is actually part of us, that objects such as smartphones are often just as functionally essential to our cognition as the synapses firing in our heads, augmenting and extending our minds by increasing cognitive power and freeing up internal resources.

The extended mind theory holds that the mind is not trapped between skin and skull, it can extend beyond our bodies. This implies that an individual is connected to an external entity in a two-way interaction, resulting in a coupled system that can be seen as an independent cognitive system, where all components are causally related and interact with each other to govern behaviour.

The implications are not merely philosophical. If these tools are literally parts of our minds, then social issues such as data privacy, technological dependency, and digital manipulation take on moral and psychological significance.

Hacking a phone or deleting someone’s digital notes could be viewed not just as property damage, but as a violation of mental integrity.

We have not yet legislated at the level of that moral depth. But we are beginning to. In Nigeria, as in many jurisdictions, there are legal provisions that treat unauthorised access to another person’s digital device as a punishable offense, and rightly so.

Because when you pick up someone’s phone without their consent and scroll through its contents, you are not merely browsing a device. You are walking through someone’s mind.

Their call log is their social map. Their messages are their intimacies. Their search history is their private curiosity, their confessions, their fears, their longings. Everything they have felt the need to know and have not said aloud lives in that device. The device is not just an extension of the hand. It is a projection of the self.

Consider your phone number. When people need to reach you, they do not call your name into the air and wait for you to answer. They reach through that device. You are contactable only through it. Your connectedness to the world, to family, to work, to love, to commerce, is routed through that phantom limb. Remove it, and a person is not merely inconvenienced. They are amputated from their social existence.

Dependency, Consent, and the Ethics of Control:

This dependency raises a set of urgent questions that most people are not yet equipped to ask. If the device is a limb, a phantom extension of the self, then who controls it matters as much as who owns it.

Imagine if your arm could be commissioned, without your consent, to reach for something you did not want to touch. Imagine if your legs could carry you somewhere you had not chosen to go. That would be possession, in the most elemental sense of the word.

And yet, this is precisely what happens when platforms, algorithms, and the architecture of digital addiction redirect our attention, harvest our impulse, and monetise our compulsion, all through the device we carry as though it were our own flesh.

This is where impulse control enters the conversation with full moral weight. Men and women of lesser internal discipline throw themselves at everything digitally, lashing out in comment sections, seeking attention through provocation, mistaking noise for relevance and clout for character.

The phantom limb, when unmastered, does not serve the self. It serves whoever has learned to pull its strings.

The Prosumer: You Are Already Producing:

There is a further dimension to this. Every time you stream a video, your view is counted. Every time you replay a song, you are feeding an algorithm. Every time you share, repost, comment, or react, you are not passively consuming, you are contributing to the narrative being constructed around you and through you.

Digital culture researchers identified this phenomenon decades ago. In 1980, futurist Alvin Toffler coined the term “prosumer” in his landmark book The Third Wave, envisioning a world in which the boundary between producer and consumer would dissolve as technology advanced, allowing people to take on both roles simultaneously.

In the 2000s, interactive platforms facilitating user-generated content, such as YouTube and Wikipedia, allowed consumers to become content creators, marking a shift from passive consumption to active production and engagement.

Sociologists George Ritzer and Nathan Jurgenson described this evolution as participants in digital media creation, highlighting the transformative impact of internet technologies on consumer behaviour.

You are not just a member of the audience. You are a co-author of the cultural text. Every scroll, every share, every lingering view, these are acts of authorship, whether you recognise them as such or not. The question is whether you are authoring intentionally.

Mastery: The Only Worthy Response:

There is an argument to be made, and I make it here, that human beings can transcend their dependency on devices. That we can grow beyond the phantom limb. But there is also a more honest and perhaps more urgent argument: that we are already one with the machine, whether we choose to accept it or not, and that the only dignified response to that reality is mastery.

You learned to walk. You learned to write with a dominant hand. You learned to synchronise your voice, your breath, and your thought into coherent speech.

These were all motor and cognitive skills, refined across years of practice until they became seamless. The relationship with your device demands the same developmental seriousness.

You must learn it the way you learned your own hands, not as a user, but as a sovereign.

And here is the final, critical point: Artificial Intelligence has entered this equation not as a replacement for human intelligence, but as a multiplier of it.

The honest truth is that AI, deployed by an undisciplined or shallow mind, produces shallow outputs. It is topical. It mirrors the quality of the intelligence brought to it.

But in the hands of someone who has mastered their phantom limb, who understands the architecture of their own thought, who brings intention, rigour, and depth, AI becomes something extraordinary.

The phantom limb, disciplined, becomes a superpower.

The machine did not make you. You were made first. And the machine only becomes remarkable when the person holding it has already done the work of becoming remarkable themselves.

Master your phantom limb, or it will master you.
